Garhwal Rifles Edge Past Rivals in Thrilling Shootout to Seal Semifinal Spot

Kurseong: Garhwal Rifles, Kolkata, clinched a thrilling victory to secure a spot in the semifinals of the 12th Shaheed Gold Cup Football Tournament in Kurseong today (January 28). The tournament, organized by the Kurseong Subdivision Sports Association with support from the GTA's Sports and Youth Affairs Department, is being held at the Chanmari Ground in Kurseong.


In the fourth quarterfinal match of the day, Garhwal Rifles defeated Kanakai Sporting Club (Nepal) in a nail-biting penalty shootout, winning 5-4. The regular 90 minutes saw an intense contest, ending in a 1-1 draw. ST Trackka scored for Garhwal Rifles in the 14th minute, while Bishal Darjee leveled the score for Kanakai Sporting Club in the 66th minute. Goalkeeper Binay Sarkar of Garhwal Rifles was named "Player of the Match" for his exceptional performance.

With today’s matches concluding, the semifinal lineup is now set. On January 30, Darjeeling Police will take on Hills Football Academy in the first semifinal. The second semifinal on January 31 will feature Garhwal Rifles, Kolkata, facing United Football Club, Darjeeling.
